According to an interview of Forbes with Tan Sri Dato' Seri Vincent Tan Chee Yioun, he said that he is start from a poor family. Since graduate from the secondary school, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Vincent Tan Chee Yioun is planning to further his study in law at oversea. However, at that moment, his plan was fail due to his father facing problem in business. 

Sooner, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Vincent Tan Chee Yioun is working as a clerk in a bank to help his family. At the same time, he also become an agent of insurance. In 1973, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Vincent Tan is working as the agent in the American International Assurance Company and at that moment he just 21 years old. Due to his family problem, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Vincent Tan is actually start working as a clerk in the bank. Few years later, he started his part-time of insurance agent.

However, the turning point is  when he saw a magazine's article which entitle "Hamburger Kingdom". This article is telling about the story of the McDonald, the US fast food chain. Sooner, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Vincent Tan planning to bring this product, McDonald to Malaysia. However, things do not go so easy, the McDonald headquarters had rejected his apply letter. In December of 1980, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Vincent Tan successfully grab the opportunity as the master franchise in McDonald. At that time, he hold 51% of stake and the first McDonald shop is open at Jalan Bintang, Kuala Lumpur.

The succession of McDonald do not satisfy Tan Sri Dato' Seri Vincent Tan but he continue to expand his business. In 1982, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Vincent Tan successfully buy a company name as Berjaya-Kawat with holding 37.8% of stake. And at that time he change to company name from Berjaya Kawat to Berjaya Group. In 1985, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Vincent Tan bought Sports Toto and obtained the license for his lottery business from a non-tendered privatization.

After forming the Berjaya Group, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Vincent Tan start his massive business plan which consist of Starbucks and 7-11 store. Until now, 7-11 store is able to expand nearest 2000 shops in whole Malaysia. After the economic crisis in 2008, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Vincent Tan had buy the social networking site Friendster and sold to Facebook in 2010. This allow Tan Sri Dato' Seri Vincent Tan increase his property to $500 million. Currently, the Berjay Group is involved in diverse business such as consumer marketing, multi-level direct selling, and other different form of business.

Besides, another well known story of Tan Sri Dato' Seri Vincent Tan is he became the owner of Cardiff City Football Club after a consortium of Malaysian investor bought 30% of the club's shares in May, 2010. The first business of Tan Sri Tatparanandam Ananda Krishnan venture was the Malaysian consultancy MAI holding Sdn Bhd. He was the founding director of state oil giant Petronas and was a low profile of the central bank, Bank Negara, between 1982 and 1987. Upon finish his studies in Raffles Institution in Singapore, Tan Sri Robert Kuok worked in grains department of Mitsubishi, a Japanese industrial conglomerate, between 1942 and 1945. After his father died, Robert Kouk and his two brother start their own business which is trading in agricultural commodities and named as Kuok Brothers Sdn Bhd in 1949. Under the new post-colonial government, he was venture into being a sugar merchant, alongside the government and who would have thought that a few decades later, he would be controlling the sugar industry in the world.

Business Development

In 1962, the sugar merchant facing a great challenge which the supplied of sugar in Malaysia increasing dramatically. The supply of sugar from China and the price was cheaper than Tan Sri Robert Kuok. However, sooner Tan Sri Robert Kuok had found the solution which is taking the sugar supply from India. Tan Sri Robert Kuok continued to invest heavily in sugar refinery, controlling 80% of the Malaysian sugar market with production of 1.5 million tonnes per year which is equivalent to 10% of world production. This had made him called as "Sugar King of Asia".

In 1971, Tan Sri Robert Kuok had built the first Shangri-La Hotel, in Singapore. His foray into the Hong Kong properties began in 1977, when he acquired a plot of land on the newly reclaimed Tsim Sha Tsui East waterfront. And at here, Tan Sri Robert Kuok had built his second hotel which name as Kowloon Shangri-La.

In October 2009, Tan Sri Robert Kuok's PPB Group issued a statement to Bursa Malaysia, stating that it has decided to sell its sugar units to Felda, along with the land used to cultivate sugarcane, for RM1.29 billion.

Tan Sri Robert Kuok’s business interests now cover sugarcane plantations, sugar refinery, flour milling, animal feed, oil and mining to finance, hotels, properties, trading and freight and publishing.The Kuok group was also investing in many country which including Singapore, Thailand, Philippine, China, Indonesia, and Australia. So who is this Jan Koum? An entrepreneur? A technician? A billionaire? In 19/2/2014, Forbes had post a news about the Jan Koum, the title which sound like "Exclusive: The Rags-To-Riches Tale of How Jan Koum Built WhatsApps Into Facebook's New $19 Billion Baby". Now, who is this Jan Koum? I am believe that no one knew him until he had create Whatsapps and successfully sold to Facebook with $19 billion.

The whole story is began when Jan Koum had buy an iPhone and he started realize that this will create a new  industry and able to bring a great fortune. Jan Koum was learning computer networking by himself at 18 years old by purchasing manuals from a used book store. After that he joined a hacker group called woowoo on the Efnet internet. He enrolled at San Jose State University and moonlighted at Ernst & Young as a security tester. In 1997 he met Acton, the co-founder of Whatsapps, and at that time they are not more than just a Yahoo employees. After over the year watched Yahoo go through multiple ups and down, in September 2007, Koum and Acton finally left Yahoo and took a year to decompress, traveling around South America and playing ultimate frisbee. Ironically, both of them are failed to work to Facebook but now turn up Facebook is buying their product.

The Business Development

The turning point is started at Jnuary 2009 and Koum buyan iPhone. He found out that the application having a great potential and able to bring new industry. Thus, he visit his friend Alex Fishmen and discuss about his idea. Later on, Koum decided to choose the name WhatsApp which sounded like "what's up". The reason is letting people to be more easy to contact and connecting to each other so that they are more closer to each other.

After decided what to be done, Jan Koum is persuaded Acton to join him. And at that time, the founder successfully form a small group from the Yahoo employees and able to pool $250,000 in seed money. In early 2010, Whatsapp is able bringing about $5,000 a month. In 2011, within one year, WhatsApp hit the top 20 in Apple's App Store.

In 2014, Facebook had announced that buy WhatsApps, company with at most $300 million revenues, and 55 employees at the price of $19 billion. Undoubtedly, this news had surprise everyone and doubt that is WhatsApps worth so much? 

WhatsApp had more than 4.5 million users and this had show that Facebook is planning to dominate the message market era in mobile communication. This also will helping Facebook get into the teenagers who do not like mainstream social networks but like the instant messaging like WhatsApp and Line. 

From here we can see how a person is able to change from a poverty to the richest. Just like what the founder of WhatsApps said:"Do one thing, and do it well!"
